Mums the Word

I recently added a bunch of potted mums to our porch for a fresh Fall porch-scape (is this a thing?). After a few weeks of procrastination/indecision, I finally transferred them from their crappy plastic pots to legit planters.

And then that very night, a storm blew through, and I woke up the next morning to planters, potting soil, and mums strewn across my front yard. Joy. In my frustration, I failed to take pictures. Sorry.

Now, the mums aren’t looking so good. And one seems to lose stems just by being looked at.

Anybody have any tips on caring for mums? Or is this just what mums do?

Lazy Sunday

Today has been a weird day. Mostly due of the weather – it’s been overcast most of the day, with really gusty winds. Then it started to rain.

And now the sun is shining and the sky is clear and blue. Weird, right?

So, it seemed like a good day to be lazy. To me, a Lazy (Fall) Sunday includes football and cooking. I feel so oddly domestic when I say I truly look forward to spending a Sunday in the kitchen. It’s weird – ever since we moved into this house, I have an overwhelming urge to be a homemaker! How can a house do that to a person?? I mean, I yearn to spend time with my oven. I don’t really even mind doing the laundry.  I relish the moments I get to spend with my house (told you this was weird) Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?!?

Anyhow, now there’s delicious black bean and zucchini chili bubbling in the crockpot and a batch of pumpkin & butterscotch cookies cooling on the kitchen table! Yum!

How have you spent your Sunday/weekend?

(ps – if you’re interested, the cookie recipe is from Annie’s Eats.)

Fun in the Sun(flowers)

The older I get, the more I appreciate a perfect Fall day. And we had quite possibly the best one this past Saturday. The sun was shining, not a rainy-looking cloud in the sky, and perfect sweater-weather temps. It was poem-worthy.

So we did the most logical thing – got some friends together and went to a Sunflower Festival at this cool local farm!

Just a couple of friends, hangin’ in a sunflower field…

I think we’ll definitely be going back next year.

Autumn Wreath & Front Porch Reveal

I finally had some free time this weekend to put together a new seasonal wreath (doesn’t everyone craft at 10pm on a Saturday night??)…

I purchased a grapevine wreath and fall floral stems from Michaels. I used a roll of burlap that I had leftover from my Spring Wreath project.

I started by wrapping the burlap around the wreath. Then I trimmed the long stems and arranged the flowers before I hot-glued them down to keep them in place (half of my Christmas wreath wound up in our side yard last year due to wind and a lack of more permanent security measures).

And ta-da! A wreath is born!

And now the whole front porch is decked out for Fall, with some mums lining the steps and a new wreath on the door. Still need some pumpkins and squash to finish things off, but it’s definitely starting to look like Fall around the Kennedy house 🙂

Weekend Update

I know I don’t normally post on the weekends, but we did some fun DIY projects that are coming your way this week –  call this a “teaser” if you will. What does this week have in store? A seasonal front porch reveal, and a side table makeover for under $40!

Stay tuned!

Now, I am off to enjoy what remains of the weekend with some football, coffee and a heaping bowl of this hot-out-of-the-oven apple crisp…

Oh. Yea. This totally makes for my failed attempt at sweet potato fries tonight.
