Painted Wine Bottle Centerpieces

A Gatsby party certainly can’t be a Gatsby party without plenty of bottles of booze: some to drink and some to use as decor!

I’ve been hoarding empty bottles for a while, just waiting for the opportunity to create my own Painted Wine Bottle Centerpieces.

And making your own really doesn’t get much simpler than these four steps:

Step One: get ahold of some empty wine bottles.

Step Two: select your acrylic craft paint (or spray paint) of choice.

Step Three: paint wines bottles. Preferably whilst consuming more wine. (see example above)

Step Four: embellish and enjoy!

The embellishing part was pretty simple; I just used items I already had on-hand.

For the first bottle, I strung up my own strand of craft pearls so that one could wear a necklace. For the second, I tied bunches of gold curling ribbon to a bamboo skewer. For the third, I dug a few sprays of silver beads out of my Christmas bins and stuck them in the top. I like that these give it the look of champagne bursting out of the bottle.

Then I arranged them on the food table, and voila! An easy painted wine bottle centerpiece! And pretty much for the cost of free if you consider that I’d have drunk the wine anyway 😉

Easy Gold Foil Garland

One of my favorite diy decorations is this jazzy gold foil garland made from… baking cups! Yep! No joke! I made all this garland with baking cups, some glue and string!

It’s super, super simple: just flatten ’em, fold ’em in half, and start stringing them up for a glitzy look. Good, mindless work to do while you’re watching TV, or while your husband’s watching sports and you’re bored 😉

I found this article chock-full of ideas for baking cups, including this garland.

I bought both regular and mini-cupcake sized cups (similar to these and these*) and played around arranging them until I found a pattern I liked: two mini, one regular, two mini, one regular, etc.

This gold foil garland would also be great for a photo-booth backdrop, or for plenty of other holidays and parties, from a bridal shower to a New Year’s Eve party!

I’m sure this garland will make plenty of appearances around my home in the future; it’s too pretty and shiny to keep packed away for too long!

DIY Tissue Paper Pom Poms

What’s a party without tissue paper pom poms?

Not as jazzy as a party with tissue paper pom poms, that’s for sure!

Seriously, these are some of the easiest diy decorations you can whip up. And pretty affordably, too.

There are plenty of tutorials out there on how to make your own tissue paper pom poms; I found this one from Chelsea at Two Twenty One to be the most helpful. Plus, you get a lot of bang for your buck pom pom.

To make mine, I layered three sheets of white tissue paper with two sheets of gold tissue paper (similar to this*). I followed Chelsea’s tutorial pretty closely, so I got three different sizes from the first set of pom poms I made.

I made additional sizes based on how I wanted to use them.

And I used them all over: as the centerpiece of the ceiling, as a simple photo-booth backdrop, as part of the food table backdrop, and randomly scattered about, just because. The decorating possibilities are pretty near endless with these things!

DIY Roaring Twenties Birthday Sign

I love any excuse to break out my gold paint pens, and this party was certainly no exception!

For as frustrating as it can be, I really do enjoy free-handing signs, prints and paintings. To create this Roaring Twenties Birthday sign, I looked at several Art Deco-style fonts as well as Gatsby-inspired invitations, and even scenes from the recent movie to get inspiration for my sign. And I always sketch out my ideas before putting paint pen to posterboard.

Sketching out a Birthday Sign

I used a ruler to draw out the rectangular center where I wanted my text to live, then I spaced out each line of text before going over it my gold paint pen. I used two different gold paint pens to create this sign: a 2.0mm tip for the thicker lettering and an extra fine point tip for the thin, detailed lettering (similar to these*)

After I got my text in place, I added the Art Deco-y designs at the top and sides.

One word of advice: don’t cut corners when you sketch! I was going off of my loose sketch as I was laying out my text, and had to squeeze in the ” ‘s” on my name as an after-thought, because I hadn’t accounted for it in my rough sketch. Whoops! Tis the fault and frustration in free-handing! But thankfully, I’d decided on a super-skinny type of font for my name, so it doesn’t look too wonky.

To get the posterboard to fit into our existing frame, I created my own “matte board” with gold streamers. (Just to note: this frame is probably the most versatile piece of decor in our house! I cover it up and use it as a backdrop for so many holidays! Sure beats taking it down and storing it somewhere!)

The finished sign made for a perfect party centerpiece on our mantel, all dressed up with gold accents (yep, those are Christmas ornaments!), mercury glass and white flower arrangements.
