New Desk Accessories, or Who Doesn’t Need a Giant Clothespin?

desk -- TwoPurpleCouches.com

While I wait for my “dream office/liiiiiibrary” (say it with a British accent) to take shape, I decided to spruce up my desk space a bit.

From left to right: cool, twisty blown glass by my cousin, owner of Glassometry Studios. The giant clothespin is from Michaels; I spotted it over the weekend, and for $3, couldn’t pass it up! I picked up the postcard at a photography portfolio share at my work a few months ago. And the 2013 calendar is by Pinwheel Print Shop.

Do you have a fresh new desk look for a fresh new year?

How To: Get a 9.5-ft Frasier Fir Out of Your Family Room

Today, I’m going to share an easy How To, which may come in handy for those of you who still have live Christmas trees in your home. Let’s start with giving your tree a look-see. If it’s dried and droopy, like Exhibit A below, it is ready to be removed. A good indicator of this is when limbs have fallen so low, your tinsel and/or light strands slide off.

First, remove all decorations, including any tinsel, lighting, ladders, ornaments, toppers, etc.

Assess all exit options, i.e. windows and doors, for the best fit. Trim any excess/excessively large branches as needed. Helpful Hint: place branches on a spare sheet or towel to catch any dripping sap.

Attempt to cover tree with tree bag. Laugh when bag barely covers half of the tree. Say to yourself, “maybe we should only get a 7.5-ft tree next year so it fits in these 8-ft tree bags?”

Carry tree to pre-determined exit. I would recommend wearing gloves, as there is lots of sap, and a potentially molding stump to contend with.

If exiting via a deck, heave it over the railing. Remove bag.

Drag into wooded area.Creepy grainy photos are optional.

Now all that’s left is to sweep up lots and LOTS of needles!

Congratulations! You’ve now successfully removed a 9.5-ft fir tree from you home!

Weekly Wishlist: Not-So-Ugly Mugs

With the temps in the 20s here, I am constantly reaching for a warm mug of coffee or hot cocoa. And my kitchen cupboards are pretty well stocked as I’m a bit of mug-lover. Here’s a round up of some particularly marvelous mugs.

Anthro initial mug

These Anthropologie monogrammed mugs are a classic. Chic, simple, and the perfect size for a double-shot latte.

C&B coffee mug

The “simply stated” nature of this Crate & Barrel pick is great. Just in case there was any doubt as to what this mug contains.

World Market whit wax resist mugs

These tone-on-tone patterned mugs from World Market are a subtle, yet sophisticated way to have your cuppa in style.

IMKAdesign mug

The imperfect scallopy design of this hand-made mug and saucer from IMKAdesign is absolutely delightful.

World Market sophia mugs

The watercolor look and exotic-feeling pattern of these Sophia mugs from World Market would certainly jazz up your daily joe.

World Market polka dot stacking mugs

Umm, who doesn’t love polka dots? On stackable espresso cups? World Market with the win, again!

Pier 1 sheep mug

I love mugs with quirk. So if you’re into soft, cuddly sheep, this Pier 1 mug has your name on it. My favorite personal quirky mug? One with a sketch of William Shakespeare that reads “Bard Hair Day”. I love a good literary pun.

What’s on your Wishlist this week?

2013 “Resolutions”

Let’s start off with a some background info: my husband works for SparkPeople.com. If you’re not familiar with SparkPeople, it is the largest online diet and healthy living community (and it’s free!). In the spirit of “practice what you preach,” SparkPeople employees are encouraged to participate in an annual challenge that includes fitness and nutrition goals. Participants are also asked to create some personal goals to work towards throughout the year. They don’t have to be fitness or nutrition-related; these goals can be anything. I thought writing these out and sending them into the ether of the Interwebs might help with accountability and responsibility and all those other abilities.

I put “resolutions” in quotes because that word makes me shudder a little bit, and conjures up almost immediate expectations of failure. So maybe something like resolutions will have a more positive effect on my mental outlook for the year to come, especially since after reading through these, I may be asking for a lot of myself at once!

Here goes nothing!…

1.) Work on my diet/food prep. There are a lot of different components to this, but here’s what I’ve got in mind – I already eat a fair amount of organic fruits and veggies, but I want to make an even stronger effort at eating only organic, as well as looking for organic/local/grass-fed sources to buy meats (anyone have any recos?). I’m considering giving the Paleo diet a shot, as I feel it would really benefit me to cut out as much dairy and grains as possible. I’d also like to make an effort this year to make more basics from scratch, at home. For instance, spices and seasonings, chicken or veggie stock, etc, instead of buying from the store. I also want to plan at least 2 meals a week, so we don’t get sucked into the “let’s pick something up because I forgot to defrost the chicken” habit. Make sure those meals include plenty of veggies and fish!]

>> I’ve already started with meal planning: Sunday we had Black Bean Burgers and tonight, Mexican Quinoa is on the menu! Yum! I found both recipes on Annie’s Eats: Black Bean BurgersMexican Quinoa

2.) Find a form of exercise that doesn’t feel like a chore. I’m really looking forward to daily dog walks once the weather improves a bit, but I really need help motivating myself (indoors or out!) when the weather’s so cold and dreary.

3.) Start writing again. My novel is never going to write itself! I don’t know what I’ll write, but I think a personal project, beyond this blog, will be good for me 🙂

What are your “resolutions” for the year? If you have any tips that could help with mine, I’d love to hear them! Let’s help keep each other on track and motivated!

{I already listed out some of the house projects I want to complete in 2013. You can view those here.}

Decorating Confessional

In the spirit of a New Year, and all the resolution-making happening this week, can I make a confession?

I am terribly nervous to pack away all of the Christmas decorations.

I realize that this sounds silly, but getting all of the usual things back out stirs up all kinds of thoughts and doubts on how to decorate our house. It was nice to focus on Christmas decorations, which obviously fit a set theme. But we’re still figuring out our style (and trying to agree on the same style/s), and as silly as it sounds, thinking about this, plus how to incorporate it into each room, and get all the furniture and art and accents to work together, stresses me out a bit! Okay, maybe more than a bit. Maybe alot.

So I keep trying to remind myself of some of the points that Sherry and John of Young House Love made during their talk at Books by the Banks. Mainly, don’t feel like you have to do everything perfectly, and all at once. Because I feel like this all the time, and I really need a reminder.

Maybe I need to print this out on poster-sized paper and hang it in every room in my house???

Am I the only one who gets stressed out about home decor? Do you have tips on how to deal with stress, home-decor related or otherwise? I always like to remind myself that “stressed” spelled backwards is “desserts”… and I do still have plenty of holiday sweets lying around the kitchen…
