But first, let’s talk about this adorable hot cocoa sign!

I am quickly falling in love with hand-painted wood signs. And they’re really not complicated to make; the hardest part is deciding what size you want your sign to be!

I opted for a small, horizontal sign and used a piece of poplar that I already had on hand. A scrap or two of pallet wood would be great as well.

What you’ll need:

  • wood (I used a 1/4″ x 4″ x 2′ piece of poplar)
  • wood stain
  • acrylic craft paint
  • chalk
  • paintbrush

How to make a hot cocoa sign:

Start by staining the wood. I applied one coat of Minwax stain in Espresso and let the board dry overnight. Meanwhile, sketch out the phrase a few times to decide which style of lettering you like best.

Hand-lettering tip: sketch phrase with chalk before painting

Use a piece of sharpened chalk to sketch out the lettering. This is a great way to make sure that the words are centered and evenly spaced—you can just wipe away and re-sketch any wonky spots!

Hand-painting a wood sign

Use a round fine-tipped paintbrush to apply the acrylic craft paint, going over the existing chalk sketch. I found it easiest to work one letter at a time.

As soon as the paint is dry, the sign is ready to be displayed!

I think this sign would be a perfect addition to a hot chocolate bar, but I decided to add two screw eyes and hang it from this Christmas Trees pallet wood sign I made a few weeks ago:

Love these DIY wood pallet signs for holiday decorating!

How cute are these signs paired together!? I love, love, love this combination! The texture and stain of the woods, the way the white paint pops off the dark background, the imperfections of the hand-lettering… this is why I love to DIY!

Aww, thank you Meredith! I practiced my lettering on scrapbook paper several times before attempting to do it on the sign. Plus, that chalk trick is a lifesaver – you can wipe it away until you get it right 😉

Such a cute sign. I am really wondering if I could really letter it as well as you have, I guess I will have to try it! I am pinning this and sharing over at FB and Twitter! I would love it if you have a few minutes to stop over and share this at Celebrate Your Story link party at Celebrate and Decorate. The party opens on Saturday evening and stays open for a week!
