DIY Tea Towel Mother’s Day Gift

Time for tea? Make Mom a special DIY tea towel gift for Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is just over two weeks away (yep! May 8th – mark your calendars!) and we don’t want you to show up empty-handed! My mom has always loved tea, so I thought I’d make her a special DIY tea towel gift.

I am so excited to bring you this Dollar Store Mother’s Day Craft Challenge! I’ve teamed up with a few blog friends for a budget blog hop. Each blogger had to create a Mother’s Day craft for less than $10 and they did an amazing job! Make Mother’s Day special on a budget and check out all of the wonderful crafts we created!

I used my Silhouette Cameo and heat-transfer vinyl to make my towels, but if you don’t have a Silhouette, you could just as easily cut out a design by hand and use fabric with an iron-on adhesive.

Here’s what I used to make my tea towel:

  • plain kitchen towel (I found mine at JoAnn Fabrics)
  • heat-transfer vinyl
  • Silhouette Cameo cutting machine
  • iron

For my teacup design, I modified a mug design I already had in my Silhouette library. I did this by ungrouping the shape and then stretching it until it looked more like a teacup than a coffee mug. Then I re-grouped the elements together and flipped the design.

I added a sheet of white heat transfer vinyl to my cutting mat, shiny side down, and loaded it into my Cameo. Once the design had been cut and weeded, I was ready to iron it onto my tea towel.

How to iron a design onto a tea towel using heat-transfer vinyl (or HTV)

This process is pretty simple: flip the design, vinyl side down, onto the tea towel. Cover with a pillowcase or piece of cotton fabric and press the iron down on the design for 30-45 seconds. Do not rub the iron back and forth. Once the vinyl has adhered to the towel, peel away the clear backing.

I pressed the towel to get any remaining wrinkles out, and my teacup tea towel was ready for tea time!

I love this tea towel. I haven’t used my Silhouette for heat transfers yet and this looks like a great beginner project for me to try.
