There’s just something about a fresh bouquet of flowers that makes our home feel brighter, homier, and a little more sophisticated. More often than not, I treat myself to a bouquet or two while I’m doing our weekly grocery shopping. Our local Kroger stores have great floral departments and I love browsing through their selections, especially their roses. They come in so many bold, beautiful colors!
While I’m not a pro at floral arranging, it’s a skill I’ve always been drawn to, and am always working to improve. I enjoy putting together my own bouquets and learning new tips. Yes, there’s some art to it, but with a few tried-and-true tricks, you can create lovely arrangements on your own, like this simple DIY Mason Jar Flower Arrangement.
Do you ever see floral arrangements and wonder how they were put together? While it’s easy to pick up a bouquet and simply drop it in a vase, taking some extra time to trim and arrange the flowers will produce beautiful results. I’m going to show you each of the steps I took to put together my Mason Jar Flower Arrangement, and share a few tricks I’ve learned for creating beautiful arrangements at home.
Here’s what I used for my flower arrangement:
- Kroger signature roses
- Kroger garden delight roses
- waxflower
- hydrangea
- lemon leaves
{Tip} Choose a focal flower for your arrangement, then select a few complimentary elements, like sprigs of greenery and berries or sprays of smaller flowers. I wanted the white roses to be the stars of my arrangement. I chose a white hydrangea to add extra shape to my arrangement, and the purple waxflower and lemon leaves to add color contrast and texture.
Here’s how I created my floral arrangement:
Step 1: Fill mason jar about ¾ full with water. Add the “base” layer first – the hydrangea and lemon leaves.
{Tip} Trim stems at an angle and remove all leaves and offshoots that will fall below the water line. This helps keep the water cleaner.
Step 2: Working clockwise from the bottom of the jar, I layered in the signature roses one by one. I varied the heights slightly, with some blooms resting on the lip of the jar. I used 6 signature roses.
Step 3: Next, I added a few stems of waxflower opposite the hydrangea to balance out my arrangement.
Step 4: To finish, I added a few stems of the smaller garden roses to the center and filled in any bare spots with additional waxflower.
I purchased all of these flowers at our local Kroger store. Aren’t the roses beautiful?
Kroger has a wonderful selection of colors, from white to yellow, coral to orange and light pinks to red. I had a hard time deciding which ones to bring home with me! Oh, and did you know that all of Kroger’s roses are Rainforest Alliance certified? This means that their roses are sustainably sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms and forests, which are managed according to rigorous environmental, social and economic criteria designed to conserve wildlife; safeguard soil and waterways; protect workers, their families and local communities; and increase livelihoods.
I was also surprised to learn that Kroger is the largest florist in the country, and that, for the past 30 years, they’ve been providing the rose garland for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. That’s right! That gorgeous garland of red roses presented to the winning horse and jockey is created by Kroger florists in Middletown, Kentucky! Pretty cool, huh!? You can follow the journey of these special roses in the video below, and visit this site to learn more about other Kroger sustainability goals.
