Here We Go

No, I am not referencing the recent slogan of a popular light beer… we finally have some DIY-ing underway in our house! What, what!

All the planning, all the pinning, all the nagging, has led to wall paint and crown moulding being purchased this past weekend! To say I am excited is an understatement. And although we didn’t actually start one of these projects (painting) until 5pm Sunday night (better late than never, am I right?), the hallway between our kitchen and bathroom already looks loads better.

Here’s a little teaser photo for you.

Sorry about the terrible quality of this photo; this hallway is completely devoid of natural light, and it was probably about 10pm when I snapped it.

We’re a long way off from a “big reveal,” but progress is progress. Here, in short, is our current to-do list:

– paint kitchen, hallway and powder room

– install crown moulding in family room, dining room and foyer

– paint family room and foyer

– install bookshelves, storage and window seat in my office

– paint my office

Have you done any painting recently? Are you a bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed painter? Or do you start on weekend projects when your weekend is nearly over?

Chalk Art Notebooks

I’ve been at it again! Still loving the chalk-art look, on any surface or in any medium I can muster 🙂

I used paint pens to create this one. I’d love to play around with different colors and combinations of paint pens – I think the effect could be really cool!

I used a black pencil for these; I liked the contrast with the bright washi tape.

Now that I’ve got the hang of the lettering down a bit better, I want to play with embellishing the space, with flourishes or ribbons or things like that. Have you tried chalk art lettering? Any tips to share? I’ve yet to try it on an actual chalkboard, haha!

DIY Washi Tape Notebooks

Washi tape seems to be the hottest thing in crafting right now. So I recently bought a few rolls to see what the fuss was all about. I don’t know if I’m hooked, but I’m definitely having fun coming up with crafts and ideas to use it! I’ve seen a few “dressed up notebooks” around Pinterest and Etsy lately, so I thought I’d try my hand at creating my own washi tape notebooks!

I found sets of 3 Moleskine kraft journals on Amazon for a pretty good price. I chose the kraft covers because I thought the tape would adhere best to this surface, and because the fun tape colors and patterns really pop against the neutral kraft paper! I especially love how the purples and blues look! These are my favorite combos.

Molly was my “photo assistant” for the day. Here, she wants you to see how cute these miniature rolls of washi tape are!

Are you a washi-fan or a washi-foe? What sort of cool washi-projects have you done? I’d love to know/see pictures!

Weekend Recap

A rather uneventful weekend, but sometimes those are the best!

The hunt for crown moulding began. Holy Goodness! Wood trim is expensive! And since we only want to do every room on our first floor… we’d better start saving. Or maybe we should just do the powder room??

I started playing around with some more chalkboard-inspired art, this time using some colored pencils I found in my old art box from high school art class. Good thing pencils don’t dry up over time! Also rediscovered a sleeve of oil pastels… I forgot how much I liked drawing with those… may have to pull those out in the near future and see what kind of damage I can do with them.

And lastly, I made up a batch of soup for lunches this week. Variations on butternut squash, with carrots, shallot, garlic, curry powder and a dash or so of red pepper flakes. #yum!
