How to Make a Baseball Field Fruit Tray

I remember back during football season, I saw a lot of ideas for setting up vegetable party trays to look like football fields. When I started planning out details for the baby shower I hosted last month, I figured there had to be a baseball version. But much to my surprise, there were very few examples to be found! So after some thinking and sketching, the hubs and I came up with a design for a baseball field fruit tray.

Before I could start building my baseball field fruit tray, I needed a surface to create on. A basic dinner plate wasn’t going to cut it. To really achieve the look of a baseball field, the serving surface needs to be a flat, fairly large square or rectangle. The hubs found a scrap piece of fiberboard in our basement that was a good dimension, albeit a bit large. We wrapped it in aluminum foil and then I started laying out the shape of the baseball field.

Here are the “ingredients” I used for my baseball field fruit tray:

  • graham crackers
  • green grapes
  • strawberries
  • cantaloupe
  • large apple

First, I laid out graham crackers for the baselines, creating a diamond shape. I added a small bowl for the pitcher’s mound that would hold fruit dip:

Then I used green grapes to create the infield…

and sliced strawberries to create the outfield.

I placed cantaloupe pieces along the first and third baselines to create the dugouts.

Then I cut a few slices from a large apple to create three bases and home plate.

The hubs got fancy with some of the leftover apple and cut small smokestacks like the ones at Great American Ball Park (see above behind the first base line), and even a “C” for the Cincinnati Reds:

He may have a future in food design!

All-in-all, this baseball field fruit tray wasn’t difficult to create, it just required a large-ish surface.

There’s a part of me that has always enjoyed plating food in fancy ways for parties, though I’ve never taken on re-creating a sports stadium before. But I’d definitely try it again!
