Geometric Holly Ornament

Are you getting into the holiday spirit? It’s in full swing here in our house, especially now that we’ve hauled out the holly… in the form of this geometric holly ornament, that is!

Today is a pretty cool day, because it’s a Silhouette Challenge day! ย It’s been several months since I’ve participated in a Challenge, so if you’re new here and not sure what this means, here’s an explanation! On the second Monday of each month, members of the Silhouette Challenge Facebook group share projects related to that month’s theme. This month’s theme is “holiday” (big surprise, huh?), so be sure to scroll allll the way to the bottom of this post to see more holiday ideas and inspiration!ย But wait! There’s more!ย There is also an incredible Silhouette giveaway up for grabs… not one, but TWO: a Silhouette Portrait with Rhinestone kit and a Silhouette Cameo bundle! So don’t miss your chance to get in on that!

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let me show you how I made this three-dimensional geometric holly ornament! Y’know, because maybe you’d like to make one too ๐Ÿ˜‰

My husband gets most of the credit for this Challenge project. I was originally thinking of making a piece of holiday artwork for our mantel. But, not only was it his idea to make these three-dimensional ornaments, he used his engineering prowess to design a template! Which is awesome because my brain totally doesn’t work that way! And also awesome because you can download it for your personal use here!

Silhouette Studio Geometric Ornament Design

He worked his magic in Silhouette Studio to create this template, and I had fun cutting and assembling the ornaments. I used scrapbook paper to create this holly ornament. Cardstock would work well, too.

Once the design has been cut and weeded, fold each tab along the perforated lines. Then fold the remained perforated lines to start to bring the diamond shapes together. If you’d like to hang your ornament, tie a bit of baker’s twine into a loop and tape down to one quadrant before you start securing the tabs. Here’s a visual step-by-step:

Here is what the assembled ornaments will look like:

I experimented with both glue and tape to secure the tabs. I found tape to be a bit easier to work with, though getting that last tab secured down is going to be tricky no matter how you do it!

When both of my diamonds were assembled, I lined up two sides and taped them together. Then I used glue to attach three red pom poms for berries.

I love the modern-ish look of this geometric ornament. I cut several shapes out of patterned scrapbook paper, and I especially love this funky black and white patterned version!

These geometric ornaments obviously make great ornaments, but they’d also make a neat garland strung along some baker’s twine, or they could be used as interesting place cards for your holiday table, or even as gift toppers! I am confident that the possibilities are endless ๐Ÿ˜‰

Don’t forget to download your geometric ornament template (for personal use only!)ย right here! Then read on to see all of the other fun and festive projects being shared today and to enter to win either a Silhouette Portrait and Rhinestone kit OR a Silhouette Cameo bundle!
